Our Mission:   To advocate for the rights and empowerment of the people with disABILITIES and to provide needed services to people with disABILITIES in order to increase their self-determination and independence
Since 1981, SAILS has worked to make San Antonio and the surrounding counties a better place to live, work and play for people with disABILITIES.

Our Philosophy:    People with disABILITIES have the right to be treated with dignity and respect; the right to live and receive services in their own homes, and to decide for themselves what is the best for them.
Independent Living is different from other social services in that people with disABILITIES decide what services are needed and the best way to receive those services. This allows individuals more control over their own lives and leads to independence.

SAILS Vision Statement:   To empower individuals with significant disabilities through advocacy to advance their opportunities to succeed and be more independent in their daily lives.

Big Give 2020

Dear Friends of SAILS:

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebration. San Antonio Independent Living Services (SAILS) has been the nonprofit hosting the annual celebration of the ADA in San Antonio to commemorate the key meaning behind this important legislation passed in 1990-inclusion!

Sadly, I have had to make a tough decision to cancel this year's ADA celebration with plans to bring the event back to life in 2021. Most of our consumers who attend SAILS annual ADA celebration are seniors and persons with significant disabilities. Half of SAILS staff that attend the ADA every year have disabilities. In addition, some of SAILS Board members have significant disabilities. SAILS number one priority is the health and safety of all these people during these COVID-19 days.

Over the past few months, SAILS has learned how to continue to keep our consumers updated and provide a continuity of services safely. We are working with our COVID-19 procedures, wearing masks, practicing social distancing and sanitizing our work areas daily. The needs of persons with disabilities in our community are great. SAILS has moved in a direction to spend the next several months reaching out to them and assisting them with basic needs such as food, rent assistance, masks and sanitizer.

We are all in this together to help one another. I want to personally thank everyone who has supported SAILS and will continue to help us serve persons with disabilities.
